“As a Marine veteran with a high-tech background, I have developed many skills that translate to my pursuit in chemical engineering and biotechnology. I understand the importance of having reliable and accessible medical treatments. Stem cells offer promise for new medical treatments, and I want to contribute to regenerative medicine that could help injured veterans regain their quality of life. Using my quality assurance background in the military with engineering principles, I strive to develop solutions that enhance both product reliability and human well-being. I believe that every breakthrough in science transforms lives and I want to be able to make a difference for those who need it the most.”

My passion for marine life led me to the University of California, San Diego, where I am currently working towards a Bachelor’s degree in marine biology and will graduate in June. I am fascinated with how marine natural products are utilized in biotechnology to produce important pharmaceuticals and healthy foods. In the future, I see myself in an interdisciplinary career that involves both marine science and policy, which allows me to play a role in regulating and managing oceanic resources that are used in various economic sectors, including biotechnology. The scholarship money will alleviate some of the cost of housing and help me to begin to pay off my college debt from UCSD.
Equipment Junction awarded Alexander Walker a scholarship for outstanding work as a chemical engineering student at San Jose State University.
I've wanted to learn about cancer ever since I was in high school, when I first took a class on cancer biology. My passion for cancer research led me to move to the US from Chile to pursue a bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, San Diego. I am passionate about studying cellular mechanisms to harness their potential for developing solutions for diseases like cancer. I want to attend graduate school so that I can become a research scientist and eventually a professor, where I can make a positive impact on people like me, who are passionate about science and excited to make advances in areas they are especially curious about. This scholarship would help alleviate the financial cost of applying to graduate school, as well as support living expenses for the months between undergraduate and graduate school.
